  1. Thanks very much for your educational agenda and the work you do. When I was young my mother told me "Religion is the cancer of the intellect of the planet" and my 73 years appear to confirm this. Best of luck and thanks again. PS- My parents never spoke ill of any race or religion. I've never understood hatred.

  2. Excellent, informative, challenging programme as always. I want to pick out one item which actually was in no way a major segment, rather it was in passing, but very important and one could spend a long time talking and writing about it, namely the problems associated with Stop the War, of which in its early days I used to be a member, before resigning membership some 5 years ago, partly for the very reasons identified by Maryam and Fariborz.

I have a few friends, comrades really in the broad progressive left movement, who have left STWC for the same reasons. But the problem is that STWC — for all its negative aspects — is still the biggest and strongest anti-war movement in the UK. I do still participate locally in STWC protests and demo's, although I'm not a member. There's no other organisation, certainly locally where I live, that can get so many people out in protest — not CND, not PSC &c.

Things have got especially complicated re STWC at the moment because of the concerted campaign against Jeremy Corbyn's leadership of the Labour Party. Sections of the Party and of the media are using anti-STWC rhetoric to undermine JC's leadership and project. I certainly share the feelings and criticisms of STWC as expressed and suggested (in passing) by M. and F. in the programme, but where else can anti-war protesters right now go, what else can we join?

The recent demo against extending the bombing into Syria was a case in point. As it happens, I didn't take part on this occasion, but I completely agree with STWC on this one issue if on no other. Sometimes we have to decide our priorities, have to share platforms with people who even disgust us (I do for instance when campaigning against Zionism and Israel's maltreatment of Palestinians), hold our noses, in the time-honoured phrase, and oppose the greater evil.

As I said to my friend who just left STWC, I personally can stand with STWC on +demonstrations+, can also support HOPOI, One Law for All, salute and support the Ex-Muslims of Britain and elsewhere, campaign against Israeli brutalities AND against antisemitism and all forms of racism. The world is full of ambiguities and uncertainties, and I believe we can't afford to be rigid, or indulge black-&-white thinking. There most certainly are of course +lines+ that I would never cross, as with most people. The question is where one feels one has to draw the lines.

  3. RE: TAQUIYYA (THE QURANIC OBLIGATION OF MUSLIMS TO LIE TO INFIDELS)
(taken from 'Middle East Forum' Oct, 2008):

According to sharia, in certain situations, deception – also known as 'taqiyya', based on Quranic terminology, – is not only permitted but sometimes obligatory……According to the authoritative Arabic text, Al-Taqiyya Fi Al-Islam:

"Taqiyya [deception] is of fundamental importance in Islam. Practically every Islamic sect agrees to it and practices it. We can go so far as to say that the practice of taqiyya is mainstream in Islam, and that those few sects not practicing it diverge from the mainstream…

Taqiyya is very prevalent in Islamic politics, especially in the modern era." The primary Quranic verse sanctioning deception with respect to non-Muslims states:

"Let believers not take for friends and allies infidels instead of believers. Whoever does this shall have no relationship left with Allah – unless you but guard yourselves against them, taking precautions." (Quran 3:28; see also 2:173; 2:185; 4:29; 22:78; 40:28.)

Al-Tabari's (838-923 AD) Tafsir, or Quranic exegeses, is essentially a standard reference in the entire Muslim world. Regarding 3:28, he wrote: "If you [Muslims] are under their [infidels'] authority, fearing for yourselves, behave loyally to them, with your tongue, while harbouring inner animosity for them… Allah has forbidden believers from being friendly or on intimate terms with the infidels in place of believers – except when infidels are above them [in authority]. In such a scenario, let them act friendly towards them."

Regarding 3:28, the Islamic scholar Ibn Kathir (1301-1373) wrote: "Whoever at any time or place fears their [infidels'] evil, may protect himself through outward show." As proof of this, he quotes Muhammad's companions. Abu Darda said: "Let us smile to the face of some people while our hearts curse them." Al-Hassan said: "Doing taqiyya is acceptable till the day of judgment [in perpetuity]."

Other prominent ulema, such as al- Qurtubi , al-Razi, and al-Arabi have extended taqiyya to cover deeds. Muslims can behave like infidels – from bowing down and worshipping idols and crosses to even exposing fellow Muslims' "weak spots" to the infidel enemy – anything short of actually killing a fellow Muslim.

    War is deceit:
None of this should be surprising considering that Muhammad himself, whose example as the "most perfect human" is to be tenaciously followed, took an expedient view on the issue of deception. For instance, Muhammad permitted deceit in three situations: to reconcile two or more quarreling parties; husband to wife and vice-versa; and in war (See Sahih Muslim B32N6303, deemed an "authentic" hadith). TO THIS END WAS I BORN, AND FOR THIS CAUSE CAME I INTO THE WORLD, THAT I SHOULD BEAR WITNESS UNTO THE TRUTH. EVERY ONE THAT IS OF THE TRUTH HEARETH MY VOICE. JOHN 18:37

AND THIS IS HOW YHWH IDENTIFIES HIS PEOPLE:
….SURELY THEY ARE MY PEOPLE, CHILDREN THAT WILL NOT LIE….ISAIAH 63:8
