The video features Chris Hedges and Loretta Napoleoni whose new book, The Islamic Phoenix was published on December 2, 2014. Both spoke at the New York Society for Ethical Culture with Ted Rall acting as the moderator of the event The event was co-sponsored by Seven Stories Press, New York Society for Ethical Culture, and Alternet.
One of the first questions asked was to describe the specific origins of the Islamic group ISIS. Loretta Napoleoni starting with Dr. Ayman al-Zawahiri, al-Qaeda’s theological leader and the advent of radical caliphism in the Middle East with its roots going back prior to 18th century colonialism. She explains how Jordan’s recognition of Israel in 1994 started a movement of cleansing of Islam. Ayman al-Zawahiri starting Jama’at al-Tawhid wal-Jihad which was renamed Tanzim Qaidat al-Jihad fi Bilad al-Rafidayn which fought the coalition forces in Iraq and the Shiites. She then explains the history of various Jihadists groups difficulty in the in 2006 and how ISIS formed from this.
Chris Hedges also describes the divisions with these jihadist groups and the US role in the creation of these groups and the eventual arming of ISIS
