Blast kills leader and other top commanders of Syrian Islamist group

The leader of Ahrar al-Sham which is one of Syria’s most powerful insurgent groups has been killed in an explosion.

Hassan Abboud died along with 28 of the group’s top commanders at a meeting in the northwestern town of Ram Hamdan near the city of Idlib.

Human Rights watch reports that around 50 people died in the reported suicide bomb attack.

Ahrar al-Sham are hardline Islamists and one of the biggest rebel groups fighting the government of President Bashar al-Assad.

  1. It was not reported as a ''suicide bomb'' attack. They were holding their meetings at a bomb-making factory. Whoops!

    ''But a senior member of Ahrar al-Sham who tweets under the pseudonym Mujahid al-Sham posted on Twitter that the explosion had originated in a workshop for manufacturing bombs that was adjacent to the room where the Ahrar al-Sham leaders were meeting. He said the explosion detonated huge amounts of TNT.''
