At least 47 demonstrators were arrested during demonstrations against police violence and the presence of federal agents in Seattle on Saturday. The protest led to violent clashes between protesters and police.

Police had declared the protest a riot and stated that rocks, bottles and explosives were being thrown towards officers. In footage filmed during Saturday’s protest, police can be seen violently detaining and pepper spraying the protesters.

Protesters were seen chanting “no justice, no peace,” as well as demanding that the police “get your knee off his neck,” in regards to one protester who was being violently detained.

Those arrested were charged with assaulting officers or obstruction and failure to disperse. Fifty-nine police officers were reported as injured and one was hospitalised after being hit on the leg by an explosive according to the Seattle police.

On July 22, US President Donald Trump announced a surge of federal law enforcement into cities run by Democrats, including Seattle, as part of his “law and order” campaign.

Massive anti-police brutality and anti-racism protests have been taking place all across the US and abroad since the death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis on May 25.
