George Floyd Memorial (Archival Footage) – August 21st, 2020

38th Street & Chicago Avenue – Currently talks are underway about what to to with the space in the wake of George Floyd’s killing at the hands of police on May 25, 2020. I wanted to document the current state of the 4-block area before changes are made. The area is still basically a police free zone at this point. One proposal suggests making the garden permanent. Other ideas include a civil rights museum and renaming Chicago Ave. in honor of Mr. Floyd. Activists are finding ways to preserve the street art that was painted over the plywood sheets that went up to protect businesses during the protests. The conversation over what to do with the space comes as many activists in the city are fighting to defund the Police Department and reimagine public safety. Gov. Tim Walz says he spent the weekend trying to convince President Donald Trump that visiting the George Floyd memorial in south Minneapolis — prior to his 2 p.m. rally in Mankato — was a “bad idea.” Black Lives Matter Cup Foods chicago avenue fine arts center smoke in the pit dragon wok blackeye roasting co mill city autobody lacuna gallery speedway
