“Antidotes to Islamist Extremism” – European Parliament on 2nd May 2017 – Panel 1

The event “Antidotes to Islamist Extremism” was organised by the ECR Group and the International Organisation to Preserve Human Rights (IOPHR) and supported by the EPP, S&D and ALDE groups of the European Parliament. Host of the event was MEP Geoffrey Van Orden.
Panel 1 (10:00 – 11:30) discussed the ‘DIAGNOSIS’ of the problem, its extent, the methods used so far and their success. The speakers and audience focused on the scale, extent and nature of the problem of radicalisation as well as the counter radicalisation message and the effectiveness of current methods, in addition to efforts made to minimise the potential threats to the security of our citizens.
Keynote speaker: Gilles de Kerchove, Counter-Terrorism Coordinator at the Council of the European Union.
Moderator: Geoffrey Van Orden, UK MEP and Vice-Chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists Group (ECR).
Co-organiser: Mattie Heaven, Human rights activist, Policy and Advocacy Advisor at the International Organisation to Preserve Human Rights (IOPHR).

Further speakers in the panel:
Cedric Smeets, First Superintendent at the Belgian Federal Police, Head of the Information Management Unit and chairman of the Local Task Force, the security service against extremism and radicalism in Brussels;
Jacopo Bellasio, analyst at RAND Europe where he focuses on defence and security issues and currently manages IMPACT Europe, a three-year pan-European counter violent radicalisation and extremism research effort for the European Commission;
Khaled Azmy, Director of the International Counter-Terrorism Unit at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Cairo since 2015. He joined the Egyptian Foreign Services in 1995;
Sonia Farrey, representative of the British Embassy in Brussels from the Counter-Terrorism Department.
