Dozens of ‘Black Lives Matter’ activists and other protesters took to the streets of Manhattan in New York City on Monday night, for a march over the killing of African American Daniel Prude, where they confronted several police officers and others who were seen not wearing face masks.
Protesters were filmed gathering at Penn station where they kicked down an American flag at a 911 memorial. The protesters then marched through Manhattan chanting anti-police and black lives matter slogans.
Police bodycam footage of Daniel Prude’s arrest in March sparked the protests after it was released last Wednesday.
The video showed police covering Prude’s head with a “spit hood” and holding him on the ground before he stopped breathing after officers found him naked in the street. Prude was taken to hospital but was declared brain-dead and was subsequently taken off life support on March 30.
Seven police officers were suspended in connection with the case on Thursday, with New York’s attorney general announcing the formation of a grand jury to investigate Prude’s death on Saturday.
