Sheriff Cannon on George Floyd death, protests

In a video roll call message to his deputies earlier this week, Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon stated: “What occurred in Minneapolis with George Floyd was absolutely and irreversibly a bad police action. … It’s very disturbing, not only to see what they did, but the relative ease with which they did it. … These folks are justified in being angry in demonstrating.”
Sheriff Cannon does not recognize the actions of the Minneapolis officers as an approved or prescribed law enforcement technique. He encourages the ongoing and advanced training of all employees, and the application of learned skills and techniques in the fair and unbiased treatment of all citizens. In the oath of office, each deputy swears to “conduct myself at all times with due consideration to all persons and will not be influenced in any matter on account of personal bias or prejudice.”
