US Defence Secretary breaks rank to oppose military enforcement in protests

US Defence Secretary Mark Esper has broken government ranks to say he does not support the President’s decision to mobilise the military in order to stop protests.

President Trump threatened to invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807 to employ troops to “dominate” the streets if state governors refused to do so.

Mr Esper said the decision to use active-duty forces in a law enforcement role “should only be used as a last resort and only in the most urgent and dire situations”.

According to inside sources, the president and his team expressed frustration at the defence secretary’s comments but White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany assured Mr Trump still had confidence in Mr Esper.
